It was all Raum could do not to come right out of his skin and pound Evelyn Markham into the ground. He couldn’t kill her, of course. He would never do that. But the idea of wiping the smirk from her face was one he could definitely get behind.

“And how is it exactly that you propose to coerce the archangel into doing anything for you? Do you have any familiarity with working with angels?”

Evelyn turned to regard him with remarkable calm. Though he couldn’t read her thoughts, her emotions were easy enough to track. She was gaining confidence, assurance. She was in her domain. And she thought she had Zee in her back pocket. It wasn’t a completely unreasonable expectation—as much rage as Zee was feeling, and despite her disdain for her mother, Zee was still emotionally vulnerable around this woman. So much so that Raum once more wanted to pound Evelyn Markham into the ground.

Instead he watched her closely. “You ask that question as if you’re expecting the answer to be no, which tells me that your hidden enclave of Shadow Court superiors is not as current on their information as they may like. Allow me to educate you. I and my house have made it our business to familiarize ourselves with every possible asset the Shadow Court could use to succeed in the war on magic. My son Phillip was instrumental in the bomb strike that gutted the Arcana Council and put the world on notice that the Shadow Court wasn’t to be trifled with.”

“The court sustained significant damage in that bomb strike. Damage which we now have to clean up,” Raum informed her coldly. He sincerely hoped that Evelyn wouldn’t be checking his cover story too quickly. The demons Gregori and Finn were good at their computer work, but they weren’t the masters the Arcana Council typically had at its disposal.

“And had I known it would only take a bomb blast to get you to act, then I would have set one far sooner. But you asked a question, and I’m eager to answer it. The Markham family has funded deep and steady research into the demon horde for the past twenty years. Starting about three years ago, that research has paid dividends far exceeding our wildest expectation—partly because, over the past several months, we’ve had so many more of the horde to work with. We didn’t conjure up those demons, but we were well positioned to take advantage of them. Because as I’m sure you know, Mr. Sawyer, demons want only one thing: the freedom to create chaos and death. Fortunately, this world gives ample opportunities for both.”

“You said you were able to control them,” Zee interjected. “How? The demons I’ve encountered were a shitshow of crazy.”

Evelyn smiled smugly. “One of the interesting things that we learned about demons—their sense of hearing is unreasonably acute. And highly attuned to the sound of misery. Deliver that misery to them on a biofeedback loop, and it acts as a soporific.
